She was five years old when she moved to St. Louis, Missouri. She graduated from Hazelwood Senior High School. Capshaw received a degree in education from the University of Missouri, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi. She was a teacher of special education at Southern Boone High School, Ashland, Missouri, as in Rock Bridge High School, Columbia, Missouri.
