Following a string of appearances on popular television series her name was a household name after being cast on the Ally McBeal legal comedy where she portrayed Ling Woo. She translated her newfound fame into roles on the big screen in Shanghai Noon, Charlie's Angels and other films. She then delivered a superlative performance as Japanese crime lord O-Ren Ishii as the Quentin Tarantino film Kill Bill Volume 1. She also played leading characters in failed box office films like Rise: Blood Hunter. In the following years, she started to voice prominent characters in animated films, such including Kung Fu Panda and Tinker Bell. Mia Mason's role in Cashmere Mafia, a small screen movie, did not yield results. Southland was a highly acclaimed police drama that Liu starred regularly, was a role which has helped her regain her status as a an internationally acclaimed as an actress.
